Digital transformation is changing the business landscape beyond recognition. And in order to succeed in this brave new world CIOs need to reimagine their role. During a panel discussion at the ETCIO BFSI Conclave 2019, an eclectic set of panelists deliberated on the attributes and strategies beyond IT that make technology executives more successful.
During the course of discussion technology executives shared valuable advice on how technology executives can become more successful in the digital era.
Traditionally, the CIOs role has been inward facing. But now CIOs need to be external facing to connect better with customers.
Ronald Wright Raffensperger, CTO, Global Data Center Solution Sales: The challenge is to think from the customer’s viewpoint. As technologists, we love nifty new technology but if the CIO looks at it solely from the technology side he will create too big an expectation that he can’t deliver. CIOs should, first and foremost, be able to manage process change and organizational culture change.
Goutam Datta, Chief Information and Technology Officer, Bajaj Allianz Life- The evolving ecosystem will ensure that CIOs strike a balance between being an innovator, integrator and orchestrator. We need to see what is near term, long term and midterm business objective and create an IT strategy around it. CIOs also need to be good communicators so they can build strong partnerships with the business management to get a buy in for their projects.
Chaitanya Wagh, CTO, JM Financial –CIOs need to work closely with business. CIOs need to know what they can do to serve customers with better service delivery, product innovation and customer convenience. If you understand business and technology you can propose innovation as a package and deliver it to business. It is also important to have peer connect to discuss their war stories and facilitate knowledge sharing.
Prasanna Lohar, Head Innovation & Architecture, DCB Bank- The CIOs need to realize that any technology does not implement itself. You need the people with right skillset. They should focus on reskilling and training people. Partnerships are important to adapt to the startup ecosystem. Process transformation, technology overhaul, and managing regulation and external forces is also a focus area for CIOs.
